Life size bison made from welded nails
North Dakota buffalo sculpture
Ever since I was very young I have wondered what a soul might look like, having had a near death experience and losing family and friends, I am amazed at the strength and courage that shows up when we are attacked and feel defeated. I know where that strength comes from but what does that look like?
Being a visual person I wanted to bring those curiosities to life. I took my favorite medium nails, thousands of them, welded them into hundreds of birds. The birds represent events in our lives that make us who we are.
Doves and Ravens, give us a visual form of right and wrong, good and evil, peace and turmoil, joy and anguish, all struggling to take the shape of what could be our final form.
Like a soul embodied in a cage desperately reaching through the bars for things in our lives that were taken away from us. No matter how hard we try we cannot get them back. Yet on the inside we all are given the strength that lifts us up and helps us preserve.
My hope for this sculpture is for us to step back from our busy lives and look into our own soul, having the strength to chase away the fear and get back up makes us who we are. And to also realize that we impact other peoples souls as well.
